Essência do Vinho - Redealed Top 10 Portuguese Wines

Two Douro wines and one Madeira Wine are the big winners

It is already known the "TOP 10 Portuguese Wines", obtained in the event ESSÊNCIA DO VINHO - PORTO. Wines from the Douro and Madeira regions are the big winners.

The red wine that collected jurors' preferences was the Passagem Grande Reserva 2009, prepared by Quinta das Bandeiras, from very recent vineyards planted in the Upper Douro. Also in the Douro, but in Santa Marta de Penaguião, there is the white wine that obtained the highest accolades, Alves de Sousa Personal 2008. Among the fortified wines, the Barbeito 30 Years Malvasia Vó Vera was the best scored.

The remaining "TOP 10 Portuguese Wines" consists of:
Quinta de Santiago Alvarinho Reserva 2015, prepared by Nenúfar Real, in Monção, Vinhos Verdes, (second highest white wine); Menino António Alicante Bouschet 2014, produced in Albernôa, Alentejo, by Herdade da Malhadinha Nova (2nd red); Quinta da Touriga Chã 2014, produced by Jorge Rosas in the Douro Superior (3rd red wine); And in the fourth place among the red wines, two ex-aequo - Pedra Cancela Amplitude 2013, elaborated by the Pedra Cancela project in Silgueiros, Dão, and Chryseia 2014, of the Prats & Symington partnership in the Douro. Among the fortified wines, Kopke Colheita 1957, a tawny Port of Sogevinus Fine Wines (2nd place) and Bacalhôa Moscatel de Setúbal Superior 20 Anos 1995, from Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal, obtained in the Peninsula of Setúbal (3rd fortified wine).

Barca Velha 2008 with 100 points!!

Barca Velha 2008 receives 100 points for Wine Enthusiast.

There are 100 points ... in 100 points. The 2008 Barca Velha becomes the first non-fortified Portuguese wine to reach the maximum score in a North American reference publication.

It is one of the most emblematic table wines in the country: in 64 years of history only 18 harvests have been selected. The last one, dated 2008, has just received the maximum distinction of 100 points by the prestigious magazine Wine Enthusiast. According to a news release sent to newsrooms, Casa Ferreirinha's wine is the "first non-fortified Portuguese wine to reach the highest score in a US reference publication."

The unprecedented feat already threatened to happen when, in November 2014, Barca Velha 2004 received 99 points, also awarded by Wine Enthusiast.

In fact, and made a quick search, Portugal has behaved well in what the scores regards. In 2012, it was news that Mark Squires, taster for Portugal on the Wine Advocate site of the American critic Robert Parker, had awarded 96 red-label wines to 100 red wines: Quinta do Zambujeiro 2007, Alentejo, Quinta do Vale Dona Maria 2009, from the Douro, and Quinta do Mouro Rótulo Dourado 2007, also from the Alentejo.

Most recently, in 2014, Douro Fojo 2000 red wine had 97 points, while Wine Spectator scored 98 points for Pintas 2011, oenologists Jorge Serôdio Borges and Sandra Tavares da Silva.

The story changes when we talk about fortifications. An example of this is the Quinta do Noval 2011 National Vintage (last year declared vintage) that collected 100 points, awarded by Wine Enthusiast.

Noval Vintage 2012

Noval Vintage 2012

I had the pleasure of the taste and found wonderful.

                   Noval Vintage 2012
Made from 100% estate fruit Quinta do Noval may literally be a Single Quinta Vintage Port but, first and foremost, it’s regarded as a classic Vintage Port. That is to say, a long haul traveller capable of lasting 30 years plus. Still, within the Vintage Port category, it’s not uncommon for it (or its famous older sibling Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port) to be released in years which are not generally declared (like 1931, for example).
