Dona Berta wines are produced at Quinta do Carrenho, in the Douro region, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa. The quinta is located in the heart of the "Douro Superior", in a terroir extraordinarily suited to the cultivation of vines and the production of high quality wines. The plantation/reconversion of Quinta do Carrenho started about 35 years ago. For this purpose some of the best genuinely Douro grape varieties were selected - Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão, Rabigato and Verdelho - . Besides the reconverted vines, 2 ha of century-old vines were kept that kept the varieties of the time, some of which are not even in the current register of the Douro and Port Wine Institute - Casculho, Cornifesto, Tinta Raiz, Siveirinha, Donzelinho and Folgozão. It is from this centenary vineyard, planted on land of granitic origin, that the wine Dona Berta Vinha Centenária, the ex-libris of the house, is produced. Hernani Verdelho is the great responsible for the appearance of Dona Berta wines. He grew up at Quinta do Carrenho hearing his uncle-avo say "One day you will still keep them and make a great quinta" and, after years of working on the quinta's recovery, together with his wife Fernanda, presents to the public in 2001 the Dona Berta project, wines with character and tempting that do not leave anyone indifferent.
